Every week, Denise, aka GirlieOnTheEdge, gives us a prompt word for a story that must be written in exactly six sentences. It has become one of my favorite ways to construct a story—or a poem—and, even more so, I have discovered that contributing to the collaborative world of the Six Sentence Café & Bistro walk-ins is far more fun than I ever imagined when I was first invited.
Anyway, last week, someone asked in the comments under Denise's post where they could read all of the stories to catch up to the plot, and I thought that Denise's reply was incredibly helpful for that purpose...
This week's entries can be found through the link-up, where you'll discover many talented authors sharing their work, so please do check it out.
the Six Sentence Café & Bistro #9
"You need to write the next big thing and then return to Denise," a voice rang in Aurelia's eardrums, resulting in her bolting out of the bed—as if the damned house were on fire—to prepare a cup of coffee to accompany her behind her desk.
Around half an hour had passed, yet she still stared at the blinking cursor, sipping the liquid of life while occasionally glancing at the pink Post-it note reading, "16th August"—the date by which she had to have twenty poems ready for her manuscript, or she would lose her publishing contract.
Without even noticing, she began reminiscing about the times when writing was sourced from pure emotion and wine; the only thing she had to do—in those fits of inspiration—was pick up the loose end of the yarn and follow it, but this, here, felt more like squeezing a lemon that had already been juiced.
And the worst part, the neighbors had just now decided to throw something that sounded like a Friday special at the nightclub—on a Wednesday evening—in their own home—right below her... even her noise-cancelling headphones couldn't compete with that.
"This is not working," she blurted, threw the headphones into the corner, stood up, slammed the window at the gable end shut—with enough force to send the clock above it tumbling down—and began rummaging through her collection of music.
"This should do the trick," she told herself as she took the vinyl containing Abel Korzeniowski's Penny Dreadful soundtracks out of its sleeve, set it on the turntable, and raised the volume high enough to drown out the noise while muttering, "Let's see how they like this."

MHMM!
I just listened to Weary Eyed… loved it!
Your vocals are amazing, Reelika! Brava!
( I think that song would do the trick with Aurelia’s neighbors)
😲😳 That means I need to start singing publicly again? Surely the neighbours are tired of me by now… Thank you!
Ha! Reminds me of the music wars in my dorm way way back when.
Accursed blinking cursors. Mine’s been blinking in he same spot for weeks now.
Ooh l, am happy you got a flashback. And am sure it goes away… The blinking cursor…
“More like squeezing a lemon thar had already been juiced.”
Stellar comparison!
Thank you! It’s something we say often here… “Nagu tühjaks pigistatud sidrun”. Cool to have two languages! Haha.
I can relate to Aurelia. The early days of writing were definitely sourced in emotion, words flowing easily, without effort. Perhaps the pressure of a looming deadline is tricking Aurelia into thinking otherwise. She’s still got it and deep down she knows it. Hell, the Bartender will tell her the same thing!
Obnoxious party mid-week? Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire – turn the volume up to 11! 🤣
Thank you… and…Yeah, it really is that way, isn’t it, with the emotion part? She may just have had a bad night and is anxious about the deadline… I will send her your way!
Now that’s an interesting episode… and next week? Maybe a couple of poems for you by the booth?
By the booth? Oh my. Thank you!
ah the cursor! surely the true punishment for two people cast out from a certain Garden! “Go and be fruitful. Except when you really need and want to!” (celestial bwhaa ha ha)
of course, now that Chris has mentioned it… perhaps a poetry evening at a certain Bistro? We had such affairs there before. (Ask Nick about Chris’s book release held at the SSC&B)
Oo.
I wonder what that poetry evening would look like.
Is it similar to those slam poetry nights where people read poetry as fiercely as humanly possible?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm.
If memory serves me correctly, er, the Bartender’s memory…. yessss!
Hhhh.
I myself… Have a huge stage fright… but just yesterday I had a dream about being at one of those and all of you were there too… Seriously… And I was not scared… And it was cool…
I love how you compared the picking up the loose end of the yarn to squeezing a lemon that has already been squeezed. Oh, and the neighbors turned the volume up to the max, to the point that noise-cancelling headphones couldn’t cope with that? 🤣
Enjoyed this so much! 👍
Thank you, am so happy you liked those comparisons…
About the music… it happens all the time!!!!
YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE!
The atrocities I have had to suffer lol…
and my headphones are expensive!!!
and BIG!
I like the thought of writing being sourced from pure emotion and wine.
Me too…
Thank you for the comment!
I do hope her muse comes back with the music.
I hope so too. Her muse has been slacking… 😂
Noisy neighbours, nothing worse – even though I am one myself!
It’s okay when I am noisy too 😂😆😆
