dVerse POETICS #1 | Absence of Colour

Decorative title page for "Poetry Without Margins" featuring a vintage paper background, a flying raven, mauve flowers, handwritten poetry, and a small skull illustration.

This poem was written in five minutes because of the prompt on the dVerse Poets site, Get Out Your Crayons and Come Color with Me!. Unusual as usually one poem takes me at least a week to write/edit but the description for white gave me an idea... Thank you!

Also, be sure to check out the link-up where many poets share their work and if mine is not it... there surely is an author you will like.

Absence of Colour

Most people would think
upon the colour black
when describing sadness,

but what if the colour of melancholy
was white—

an absence,

void of feeling,

numbness.

Nothingness can be
as nerve-wracking
as the waiting room
of a doctor's office:

white walls,

fluorescent light,

void of feeling,

absence of colour.

Yes. Your poem hit the mark, precisely, like a chalk outline (see what I did there ;-)).

This is an amazing poem. In India, people where white when someone dies, so I also think white is the color of grief–an absence.

I never got the idea from black of being the colour of grief, mystery yes, grief, no.
I think Indians were onto something wearing white, or having those cool weddings
I never got the idea of white being a wedding colour or one of purity,
      shouldn’t weddings be colourful?

      White rooms cause anxiety too,
      Gah!

Thank you and am happy you liked he poem and your comment made me think now.

Ah you’ve done well with the color white here….and oh yes, that doctor’s waiting room can be downright depressing.

Thank you so much for your comment,
Much appreciated and am glad you liked my little darker poem for the colourful prompt.

the line about the colour white on the original prompt somehow just gave me ideas.

A stunning absence of colour, Reelika! I love the way you describe white as ‘void of feeling, numbness’ and compare it to a doctor’s waiting room.
