a POEM IN SIX #4 | Prompt Word: FOIL

Muted mauve cover artwork for Six Sentence Stories, with a raven, faded handwritten excerpts, botanical illustrations, and a textured antique paper background.

I am not super happy about how this one turned out myself, but I am super happy that I did create something. I just yesterday watched some reels of cats jumping on counters that were covered with foil… so the inspiration came from there...

The prompts for the weekly sixes are provided by Denise and all the entries can be found at the link-up.

FOIL

Cats seem to really hate this thing…

I wonder if it has something to do
with the sensation of it touching their paws…

As if overloading their senses—
I mean…
it does feel oddly smooth,
slippery,
and crinkly at the same time…

Or perhaps it is the sound it makes once they jump on it…

Jane used to keep it on top of her fridge,
but once she came home and found her tabby with its back arched,
fur looking like spikes,
pupils blown wide…

…on top of the fridge…

It was staring down at the roll sprawled out on the floor—
hissing—
as if the foil itself
was taunting it to jump down
and fight.

    fun Six

must be (for cats confronting aluminum foil) like the phantom zone (in the old Superman movies, forget which one) but all angular reflections and shit

I can imagine cats not liking foil.

Some of them really don’t like it and it dissuades them from getting on the kitchen counters. It doesn’t work with all of them, though. I enjoyed your poem.

Cats are funny and amazing creatures and get weirded out by the strangest things. Your poem made me smile, Reelika. In my younger years, I had 2 cats, a female and male. I could easily picture Madeleine as the cat in your poem, lol.

That’s quite a picture, and my cat would do the same if he weren’t so fond of napping. 😸

Lazy cats are good cats… At least they are not creating havoc or something… Lovely things.

Her’s my comment from your other post (didn’t go thru on that site, oops!)
Lucky you’re able to learn so much code and application with school support. When the code & language evolves, you’ll have a good foundation for problem solving!
And yeah, in my gead school days, we did statistical analysis by punching hole in cardboard oblong and feeding them into a central machine in the campus’ one computer center. Lol!!

There does seem to have been a hiccup of sorts as I got the comment five times into my inbox… Who knows what that was… I have removed the others.

Anyway. Thank you so much and I do feel very lucky even if it is super hard at times…

And it seems unreal how fast things have actually changed in the tech field considering how many different era people we have in IT even… Super awesome to hear such stories.

Foil is an odd feeling substance, even for me, and I’m not a cat. (grinning)
