This was a rather interesting prompt from dVerse Poetics, asking us to write a poem inspired by The Great Lover by Rupert Brooke. As I had already been rather productive in the area of writing today, I thought there were worse ways to end the day than by writing a rather quick poem before diving into editing my other work for Thursday... UGH, editing...

I am a Great Lover Too
These I have loved:
The long walks through chilly nights,
the sleeping city, once so busy and loud,
now the only sound: my feet hitting the pavement,
so peaceful and quiet, smelling of summer.
The serenity of befriending my solitude,
my greatest companion: me, myself, and I.
Got the whole apartment to myself for the day,
reading, writing, and dancing alone,
then welcoming my lover home.
The smell of rain as I listen to its song,
gently tapping on my windows and I imagine it singing:
all is meaningless when the skies weep,
as I fall in love with the act of just lying there,
simply existing, no ill thoughts are present here.
My headphones, drowning out the noise of the world,
playing my favorite songs on repeat until I wear them out.
Like my favorite pair of mittens that my grandmother made,
keeping me warm, with a new pair every year.
Freshly washed sheets wrapped around my ankles,
cold and fragrant. I roll myself into my blanket;
it feels like a hug from a lover, warm and safe.
And when the feeling of exhaustion finally takes over my thoughts,
I sink into the nurturing arms of slumber...
I'd kill for a kiss on the forehead too.
And most of all,
the world behind the eyes of a man I adore,
bottomless,
captivating,
poetry.
In its truest form.
Yes...
All these have been my loves.

Reelika, awesome poem!! A beautiful reminder that love exists not only in grand gestures, but in quiet nights, familiar comforts, and the simple act of being alive. The ending is especially powerful—it transforms the entire poem into a portrait of gratitude.💜
Thank you so much and I loved writing it too… I havent written something so sweet in a long time.
Beautiful! I also love solitude.
Thank you so much.
that you could write this, i think you are living well.
Thank you. I am not complaining. It took some time, blood and tears to get here but.
How very tender and beautifully written – I love the love for self and also for another – Jae
Thank you so much.
I’m glad you joined us with this delightful list poem, Reelika. I smiled at the title, the memory of walking in a sleeping city awakened by your opening lines, and the shared ‘serenity of befriending my solitude’ and love of rain. And I changed the sheets yesterday after a week away and got a good night’s sleep!
Aww. Thank you so much for the sweet comment, I am so glad it made to smile and… Mmm… Fresh sheets!
I love this Reelika – what’s so compelling is its tactile vulnerability – you capture the micro-joys of being alive, those quiet moments between that actually make up a meaningful life 💜
Thank you so much for the comment and the compliment… Tactile vulnerability… Aaaa… and I do believe that those “little things” are what make life enjoyable.
Nice one
Thanks for dropping by my blog
Much love
Thank you and you are welcome.
Take care!
I also have loved new mittens knitted by my grandmother…thanks for the memory!
Thank you for the comment and you are welcome. Mittens. I may get 50 or 60 or 80. Still won’t give them up.
So many things to love, and I’m glad you enjoy such wonderful solitude. Enjoying yourself is the most important.
Thank you so much and I do agree that being able to be in your own company is important… as well… One is stuck with themselves for life.
It took me most of my life to become comfortable in my own company. Beautiful poem!
Thank you for the comment, am glad you like it and I can understand why it may be hard… I didn’t always enjoy it either.
As I read your poetic list, found my pulse slowing, breathing deepening, a warm fuzzy state of satisfaction .. relaxation. Your poem is perfection.
Aww. Thank you so much! 😊
True ’nuff, Reelika, it is the sweetest…
Awe. Thank you so much for the sweet comment.
