Six-Sentence Story #19 (Prompt Word: SIGNAL)

Six-Sentence Story banner featuring a vintage quill and ink bottle above the title on a parchment-style background with the website ofstardustandthebeasts.com.

Hello everyone! Another week has passed, and it's time to share my six-sentence story for the lovely blog hop hosted by GirlieOnTheEdge. I absolutely love this community and the challenge of having only six sentences while also incorporating a prompt word!

Musically, Return to Earth by The Contortionist is playing—one of my favorite songs and bands...

Rules of the hop:
Write 6 sentences. No more. No less.
Use the current week’s prompt word.
The link is live from Wednesday at 6:00 PM until late Saturday night.
Spread the word and support fellow writers!

Six-Sentence Story - the Vulture

Elise was in the garden, tending the red geraniums, when she heard the sirens and the sky turned black; even the chirping birds were replaced by vultures circling overhead as if waiting for something.

After the initial shock, she ran toward her childhood home—one she hadn’t visited in years—only to discover the door had rusted in place, forcing her to try the window to her parents’ bedroom where, with shaky hands, she pulled herself inside

landing on all fours.

However, she felt a presence in the room, and upon closer inspection saw a figure in the corner:

wearing a tattered,
mud-soaked nightgown,
with hair the colour of potato peels
sticking to her face
and a smile stretched from ear to ear,

not quite touching the floor
as it moved closer,

its eyes like two polished pieces of obsidian.

Elise tried to raise her hand to signal the entity to stay away, but it was as if something had tied rocks to her arms; when the figure was only a fingers' reach away, everything went black.

Trying to plead with the presence, her words got stuck in her throat; she imagined the weight of it on her chest, felt her skin prickle, and tried to speak

again,

and again,

and again.

When Elise was finally able to wake, the blaring sound of her car alarm gave her no time to adjust; she ran out of bed, hitting her toe on God knows what while rummaging through her purse for her car keys and muttering “fuck” loud enough to scare the vulture on her windowsill.

Perhaps I could invite you to read more of my work:

If you like short stories I have them scooped up into one category (including the six-sentence stories).

Or perhaps I could interest you in poetry and refections or something more personal like the Blog.

I also happen to own an IT studies blog in Estonian and "Chaos in Spring" can be listened to on YouTubeSpotify and other streaming services.

Six-Sentence Story #20 (Prompt Word: PUZZLE)

Another week has passed again, and it’s time for a new six-sentence story. This week I did something a bit different… Even if, in my case, the first person was solely used because the third person took away from the story, I think it is something a lot of us can...

Ten Thing of Thankful #3 – Another Blog Hop

This week went by so fast I didn’t even think of the ten thing of thankful blog hop while living through it. It felt as if I blinked, and it was already gone. The other hoppers’ posts of the week can be read here. Be sure to check them out at this blog hop is the most...

Six-Sentence Story #18 (Prompt Word: HELP)

Yet another week has passed, and it’s time to share another six-sentence story. However, this week’s prompt word made me derail into a psychologically dark theme. So, a small disclaimer before I let you read: if you are someone who may be triggered by domestic abuse...

Poetry On the margins of the Second Draft #3

The pieces here aren’t really poems—I’m not doing as much poetry or reflection as I am just… writing. The Second Margins were meant to be more of a messy, experimental corner of my blog—something that might ignite my imagination and lead me back to poetry. However, if...

Ten Thing of Thankful #2 – Another Blog Hop

Another week has passed, and it’s time for my second entry in the Ten Thing of Thankful (TToT) blog hop. It has been an interesting and very tiring week, but now I’ll try to find ten things I was grateful for and also please do check out the others and the hosts at...

Six-Sentence Story #17 (Prompt Word: FLAG)

Yet another week has passed. If I’m honest, I’m always waiting for the Thursday blog hops so I can share my Six-Sentence Story of the week and read others and get out of my studies for a little bit (which I love but I need something more to life). Musically, I’ve been...

Ten Thing of Thankful #1 – Another Blog Hop

Since my blog and creative work often lean toward the dark and gloomy, I thought this blog hop might be a lovely chance to show, and also remind myself, that there are still things to be grateful for. So this is my very first entry for the Ten Thing of Thankful (TToT)...

Six-Sentence Story #16 (Prompt Word: SHUFFLE)

This week’s blog hop and six-sentence story was one I felt quite hesitant about, because every time I reread it, it somehow manages to become more and more depressive. I’m not entirely sure why—maybe it comes from writing for and while loops in university to the point...

Was it just a dream? Or was it more than that? Either way that was a really good Six!

      Thank you so much!

I wonder too, if it was more than just another nightmare and that’s exactly what I wanted to do with this ending.

A nightmare – at least the entity is gone.

Now that is what I would call a lucid dream!

Lucid dreams are something else right, especially in a nightmare, knowing it is one and yet you can not make it end…

      Thank you for the comment!

what an enjoyable Six! (Even the presentation/formatting got me, as a Reader, all, “Really?! what’s up with…oh! wait, I see!”)

‘specially enjoyed the ending/waking-up ending with a very last minute “to scare the vulture on her windowsill.”

    muy coolito!

somebody say lucid dreaming?!! damn! haven’t had the pleasure since college days… (the Original ‘What happens in (lucid dreams) stays in lucid dreams’)

    nicely done yo

Excellent Six, Reelika. You took this reader down one path, seemingly wrapping it up with “hah! only a dream” but for the the vulture sitting on the windowsill. Creepy nice touch!
